LinkedIn follow-up message templates

Last updated

Use these after someone accepts your request, or after a message that got no reply. Replace everything in [brackets]. Keep each one short enough to read on a phone without scrolling. The sequence logic behind them is in how to write a follow-up sequence.

1. First message after they accept

Thanks for connecting, [First name]. I help [role] with [problem]. Curious how you handle [specific thing] at [Company] today?

2. Gentle nudge, three days later

Hi [First name], bumping this in case it got buried. No worries if it isn't a priority right now.

3. Value add

[First name], thought of you when I saw this on [topic]: [link]. It covers [one-line takeaway]. Hope it's useful.

4. Question-led follow-up

Quick question, [First name]: when your team does [task], what's the part that takes the most time? Asking because we've been working on exactly that.

5. Light proof point

Hi [First name], we recently helped [type of company] cut [thing] by [honest number or result]. If [problem] is on your radar, happy to share how.

6. Offer a smaller step

No need for a call. If it's easier, I can send a two-line summary of what we do and you can tell me whether it's relevant.

7. Polite close

I'll stop here so I don't clutter your inbox, [First name]. If [topic] becomes a priority, I'm easy to find. Wishing you a good quarter.

8. Re-engage after a few weeks

Hi [First name], it's been a while. Saw [recent news or post from them] and thought it was worth a note. How's [project] going?

What to avoid

Don't paste the same text in every step, and don't pretend a follow-up is a reply ("Re: our chat"). Do not keep following up after a clear no.

Frequently asked questions

How many follow-ups should I send on LinkedIn?

Most sequences work with a first message after they accept, then one or two follow-ups spaced a few days apart. After that, stop. More than three messages with no reply tends to hurt more than it helps.

How long should I wait between follow-ups?

Three to five days is a common gap. Anything faster feels pushy, anything slower and they forget who you are.

What should happen when someone replies?

The scripted messages should stop. In Spurly, a sequence stops for a person as soon as their message is the latest in the thread.
