How to write a LinkedIn cold message: a four-part structure

Short answer: a cold message that gets answered has four parts: a hook about them, a reason you are writing, one piece of value and a single easy ask. Keep it to three to five sentences and leave the pitch for later.

The structure

  1. Hook. Something true and specific about them: a post, a project, a role change.
  2. Reason. Why you are writing to them in particular.
  3. Value. What is in it for them: an idea, a resource, an intro or a relevant result you have seen.
  4. Ask. One small, low-effort question, ideally answerable in a line.

Example: sales

Hi Priya, saw your post on hiring engineers in a tight market. I work with fintech teams on shortening that process. One idea that helped a few teams: [one concrete tactic]. Would it be useful if I sent over a short checklist?

Example: recruiting

Hi Sam, your work on [project] caught my eye. I'm hiring a [role] on a team doing similar things, and the scope is [one concrete detail]. Open to a 15-minute chat, or is the timing wrong?

Hi Dana, I'm a [role] who has followed your team's work on [topic]. I noticed you're hiring for [role]. Could I ask what the team values most in that hire?

Why it works

  • The first line is about them, so it reads as written for one person.
  • The value comes before the ask.
  • The ask is small, so saying yes costs little.
  • Giving an easy "no" or "wrong timing" makes honest replies more likely.

Mistakes

  • Long paragraphs that explain your whole company.
  • Generic compliments.
  • Asking for 30 minutes before any trust exists.
  • Sending the same text to everyone; see personalising at scale.

Copy-ready wording is in the cold outreach templates. The rest of the process is in the outreach guide.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a LinkedIn cold message be?

Aim for three to five short sentences. People read these on their phone between other things.

Should I include a link?

Usually not in the first message. A link can make a message look like spam. Offer it in a reply once they are interested.

Is a cold message to a connection different from an InMail?

An InMail goes to someone you are not connected to. A message to a new connection is a normal message. Spurly does not send InMail.
