Cloud vs browser-extension LinkedIn automation: which is safer?
Short answer: cloud tools run on the vendor's servers and extensions run in your own browser. Cloud avoids putting code into the LinkedIn page, which is the one place LinkedIn can inspect directly, so many vendors call it safer. Both still break LinkedIn's rules on automation, and neither removes the risk from volume, timing or spam reports.
How the two work
| Cloud tool | Browser extension or desktop app | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | The vendor's servers, using your connected account | Your browser (or computer), on the LinkedIn page |
| Laptop needed open | No | Yes |
| Touches the LinkedIn page | No | Yes; extensions can modify the page |
| How you sign in | You connect your account once | You stay logged in on your own browser |
| Where activity comes from | A server location | Your own device and IP |
| Examples | Expandi, Dripify, HeyReach, Spurly | Extension-based tools; Waalaxy ran as an extension until 1 July 2026 |
Waalaxy's help centre says it no longer relies on a browser extension since 1 July 2026. Many tools that began as extensions have moved to the cloud, so check the current setup before you rely on an old comparison.
What the vendors say
Expandi's page on safe tools (28 September 2026) says cloud tools "run your account from their own servers, so nothing sits in your browser", while extensions "inject into the LinkedIn tab itself, the one place LinkedIn can look directly". It also lists a dedicated IP per account, conservative limits, human-like pacing and honest disclosure as the other things to check. HeyReach says it gives each account its own dedicated static residential IP address.
That is a vendor's argument, and Expandi sells a cloud product. It is a fair reading of the mechanism, but there is no public evidence that LinkedIn treats the two differently once it decides an account is automating.
What does not change
- The rules. Both are third-party software; see does LinkedIn allow automation?.
- The limits. Weekly invitation limits apply to the account whatever sends them (weekly limit).
- Spam reports and low acceptance. A server cannot fix a bad list.
What cloud adds
Cloud tools bring their own questions: the vendor holds a session to your account, so ask how it is stored (Spurly's security page), where activity appears to come from, and whether the vendor offers a dedicated IP. Spurly does not currently offer a dedicated IP per account; Expandi and HeyReach do.
A fair summary
Cloud is better if you want campaigns to run unattended and to keep code out of the LinkedIn page. Extensions and desktop tools are better if you want activity to come from your own device and IP and you are happy to keep the browser open. Neither is a safe harbour: the rules, the limits and the quality of your list matter more than where the code runs.
How to choose
- Decide whether you want campaigns to run with your laptop closed. If yes, cloud.
- Ask the vendor for its per-action limits and whether the tool refuses to exceed them.
- Check that sequences stop on reply and that it pauses on errors.
- Ask where your account's session is stored and who can access it.
- Compare price. See Spurly vs Expandi.
Spurly is cloud-based. The Chrome extension captures profiles and starts outreach, and sending runs from the cloud; see the Chrome extension. Full guide: is LinkedIn automation safe?.

Frequently asked questions
Are cloud LinkedIn tools safer than extensions?
They avoid running code inside your LinkedIn tab, which is one place LinkedIn can look directly. That is a real difference, but both are third-party automation under LinkedIn's rules and neither is risk-free.
Can I use a cloud tool and an extension on the same account?
You can, but every tool's actions come out of the same LinkedIn allowance. Spurly counts its own app and its Chrome extension against one weekly invitation budget.
Does a cloud tool need my laptop open?
No. A cloud tool runs from its servers, so campaigns continue when your computer is closed.
Does the Spurly Chrome extension automate LinkedIn?
The extension captures profiles from pages you open and lets you start outreach. Sending runs from the cloud through your connected account.
